How To Get The Walsh University First Responder Discount

Walsh University takes 15% off nearly all of its academic programs for first responders and their dependents who are accepted for admission, and the page asks for verification of your employment or volunteer work. The offer is called the Service to Scholars Discount Program.

Walsh is in North Canton, Ohio, and its page says it offers more than 30 online and graduate programs designed for busy working adults. Among the programs it features for first responders are a 2-year fast track Bachelor of Science in Nursing and an online accelerated MBA that the page says you can finish in as few as 10 months. If your shifts rotate, the page also says classes begin every 8 weeks, so you aren’t waiting on one start date a year.

How To Get The Walsh University First Responder Discount

  1. Look through the program list on Walsh’s page and pick a program. The page says a complete list is at walsh.edu/online.
  2. Apply to Walsh and be accepted for admission. The discount goes to accepted students, not applicants.
  3. Be ready to verify your employment or volunteer work. The page says verification is required but doesn’t list the documents it takes.
  4. Check your acceptance date against the footnote: the page says the offer is available to students accepted on or after 9/11.
  5. For questions, use the contact listed on Walsh’s page.

Who Qualifies, In The School’s Words

Walsh’s page names active duty or volunteer law enforcement officers, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, search and rescue members, and dispatchers, and says first responders “include but are not limited to” those. Volunteers count, which matters if you run calls with a volunteer department and work a different job on the side.

The page says the discount covers your dependents too. It doesn’t mention spouses by name, so if you’re hoping to use it for a husband or wife, ask admissions before you count on it. Veterans are on the list, and the page adds that they may qualify for alternate benefits.

Corrections officers aren’t named. That doesn’t mean they’re out, since the list isn’t closed, but the page doesn’t say, so ask.

What The Discount Covers And What It Leaves Out

The page prints 15% off “nearly all” academic programs. Two are excluded, word for word: the Masters of Occupational Therapy and the Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Everything else, including the online and graduate options above, falls under the discount unless admissions tells you otherwise.

There’s one more catch, and it can matter if you’ve already been offered money. The page says eligibility can be affected if you’re receiving institutional scholarships or financial aid that cover at least a 15% discount of your tuition. That includes a merit scholarship, an athletic award or other institutional grants. If Walsh has already offered you a merit award, ask the admissions office to run the numbers both ways.

About The 9/11 Date

The page’s footnote says the discount is available to students accepted on or after 9/11. That’s a start date for the current offer, not an end date. It tells you the offer applies to the group accepted from that day forward. If you were accepted earlier, ask Walsh which terms apply to you.
