How To Get The University of New Haven First Responder Discount

The University of New Haven takes 50% off tuition for first responders who are part-time or graduate students, and the Bursar’s Office wants proof of your job each academic year. The exclusion list matters if you’re eyeing a health or doctoral degree.

The university offers tuition discounts to employees of various corporations and organizations as well as public safety personnel. If you’re working shifts and taking a master’s one class at a time, that fits. A full-time undergraduate degree doesn’t: the 50% is for part-time and graduate students only.

How To Get The University of New Haven First Responder Discount

  1. Get matriculated. These discounts go to matriculated students only, so you need to be admitted to a program first.
  2. Open the Bursar’s page with the button below and fill out the Tuition Discount Verification form, submitting verification of your employment or membership affiliation to the Bursar’s Office.
  3. If you’re a volunteer or a dispatcher, add the extra proof described below.
  4. Send the paperwork again once per academic year, at least two weeks before the first day of classes.

Who Qualifies

The discount covers active personnel at the local, state, federal and international level: sworn police officers, firefighters, volunteer firefighters, full-time EMTs, volunteer EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, social services investigators in public assistance programs, corrections, parole, peace and probation officers, and prosecutors and prosecution investigators.

Volunteers get a stricter test. A volunteer firefighter or EMT has to be in good standing with the department and submit a letter certified by the chief or the chief’s designee. That letter must show you took part in at least 40% of the department’s calls over the previous year. Dispatchers must work for a recognized PSAP, which is a facility that runs around the clock and takes 9-1-1 calls.

The university doesn’t say whether spouses or children are covered. Ask the Bursar’s Office before you assume.

What The Discount Covers And What It Leaves Out

The discount applies to tuition charges only, and it can’t be combined with any other institutional discount, award, grant or scholarship. It isn’t retroactive, and it won’t touch prior terms regardless of your employment dates, so start the paperwork before the first class you want discounted.

These programs are excluded: Clinical Mental Health Counseling, M.A. – Online; Medical Laboratory Science, M.S.; Nutrition Sciences, M.S.; Paramedicine Degree Completion – Online; Physician Associate Medicine, M.M.S.; Speech-Language Pathology, M.S.; Executive MBA; Doctoral Programs (Ph.D., OTD, DHSc); Prison Education Program; Non-Credit Certificates in Cannabis Education; Micro-Credentials; and English Language Proficiency (Academic English Preparatory Program). If you’re a paramedic hoping to finish a degree online, note that the Paramedicine Degree Completion program is on the list.

Two other offers sit on the same page. Anyone employed in a crime lab or in law enforcement can get 30% off the Forensic Genetic Genealogy Certificate. And full-time first responders with at least six months of service at the West Haven Police Department or the Allingtown, Center or West Shore Fire Departments are offered 100% off tuition, under separate rules.

Before You Enroll

The university doesn’t say whether a program has to be online or on campus, though two online programs are on the exclusion list. There’s no end date for the 50% offer, and getting the paperwork in by the due date is your responsibility. For eligibility questions, email [email protected] or call the Bursar’s Office at (203) 932-7217.
