How To Get The Mint Mobile First Responder Discount

Mint Mobile doesn’t have a first responder discount, so cash back through Rakuten is the way to save. ID.me says it isn’t aware that Mint Mobile offers first responders discounts, and Rakuten pays cash back on a new Mint plan.

Mint is an online-only carrier: you order a plan on its site and bring your own phone and number or buy one there. Its new customer offer is an upfront payment of $45 for a 3-month plan, which works out to $15 a month. If you’re a dispatcher or a paramedic trying to cut a phone bill, that price plus cash back is where the saving comes from.

How To Get The Mint Mobile First Responder Discount

There’s no badge, code or verification step at Mint. The cash back works like this:

  1. Open Rakuten with the button below and sign in, or join if you’re new.
  2. Go to Rakuten’s Mint Mobile page and click through to Mint from there.
  3. Pick a plan and pay for it in that same visit. Rakuten adds the cash back only after Mint confirms your payment went through.
  4. Read the current cash back figure on Rakuten’s Mint page before you buy, since it changes.
  5. Check your total at checkout before you place your order.

What The Cash Back Doesn’t Cover

Rakuten doesn’t pay cash back on renewals, auto renewals, 7-day or 30-day free trials, Refer-a-friend orders or Starter Kits. So the cash back is for buying a plan, not for the renewal that comes three months later. It’s limited to one per member, and it can’t be more than the amount you actually paid for the subscription.

The New Customer Offer

Mint’s $45 upfront payment for a 3-month plan is a new customer offer for the first 3 months only. After that you move to full-price plan options. Taxes and fees are extra. The plan includes up to 20GB of hotspot, and customers who use more than 50GB a month may notice reduced speeds for the rest of the monthly cycle in certain locations when the network is busy. Read the terms on Mint’s plan page before you pay.

Mint 55+

Mint also sells a 55+ plan, described on its home page as a low-cost cell phone plan with full service activation exclusively for those 55 and up. If you’re a retired firefighter or officer, that plan has its own age requirement and sits apart from the new customer offer.
